Graffiti Hepburn Road stokes Croft Bristol

Graffiti on Hepburn Road stokes Croft Bristol

In a small alley off Stokes Croft called Hepburn Road (former drug dealing centre of Bristol) is (was) this intriguing piece by Nightways who seems to have cast off the winter doldrums and has become very active in recent weeks

My Dog Sighs Hugs Bristol

My Dog Sighs Hugs

My Dog Sighs, from the south coast is better know for his amazing eye myrals. This is a character called Hugs that he also likes to spray, especially on his 'free art friday' pieces

His style is melancholic and often naïve, yet colourful and fun. He has some recurring themes, such as the close-ups of eyes, the ‘hugs guy’, the hand-painted recycled cans, and –my favourite- the three-dimensional water drops. As the founder of the project ‘Free Art Friday’, he left free-to-take artworks in the streets every Friday for ten years, a project that was so successful that it spread into a global artistic movement. This huge ‘hugs’ character was made in 2015 and, luckily, it hasn’t been painted over yet.

Inkie, CheoMibzy Tribute

Mibzy/Mibsy whose real name was Matt Hibbert, had opened a spray paint shop (King of Paint) that many of the Bristol artists used for their supplies. Sadly he died in July 2014 aged only 39. There are many tributes to him in Bristol. This one is by Cheo and Inkie.

Victoriano Petrie Glazers Bristol

Victoriano – Petrie Glazers, North Street –

Called “Free the Galgo” this piece is an incredible ten paintings in one on the same wall. Featuring a Spanish greyhound the piece is meant to be seen through augmented reality via the Artvive augmented reality app. Then, it all starts to make sense and the mural comes alive and you can see the greyhound run. Galgo by the way is Spanish for greyhound.

Silent Hobo upfest street art Bristol

Silent Hobo upfest street art Bristol

Well now we are getting in to the final 10 pieces from Upfest’s 75 walls in 75 days event and I am getting a little edgy, because my ‘collector’ gene will be working overtime to ensure I get every single one, and that might be difficult.

I don’t normally associate Silent Hobo with Upfest events, so it was really nice to see that he has participated in this most unusual of years with this enormous mural in Ruby Street.

Of course, with so many murals in residential streets for this year’s event, parked cars have been a real problem. I think I might suggest to artists that next year they start their pieces four feet above the ground, or that they paint cars in the lower portion so we don’t actually miss anything (now there’s a creative concept).

As with all of Silent Hobo’s excellent observational work, he captures the mood of ordinary people, especially youngsters so well. One could do a celebration of Bristol, just by showcasing all of his pieces. It would seem that he is very proud of the city and its citizens and his murals are a wonderful record of the city in the 2000s.

Another thing that Silent Hobo portrays beautifully is pets and wild animals. Here he rewards the viewer with a fabulous cameo of a little boy and his dog in a red armchair, a delightful scene. Yet another outstanding wall from Silent Hobo and for Upfest.
