NHS workers street art Mural Bristol

NHS workers street art Mural Bristol

Silent Hobo, James Street, Bristol, July 2020

Silent Hobo

A graffiti artist has painted a mural on a house in Bristol in appreciation of people who have “kept the city going” during the pandemic.

The artwork features NHS workers helping a patient, and teachers and cleaners wearing masks.

Artist Silent Hobo said he wanted to remind people that front-line workers “should not be taken for granted”.

The mural was commissioned by a group of residents in St Werburghs using money raised by the community.

Silent Hobo has been painting for over a decade working with large brands such as Coca Cola, Disney, Levis and Google, and has other artwork on the streets of Bristol.

"The NHS takes centre view but there are also representations of the cleaners, teachers and everyone else who is keeping the city going during this pandemic," he said.

Everyone I know appreciates their efforts, everyone has used their services, they work crazy and long hours.

"I know this as my mum was a nurse many years ago when she came over from Singapore, like a lot of people from former colonial countries, and this mural is a nice way of saying that their efforts have not and should not been taken for granted."

The community group said they it wanted to cover up "ugly tagging" that had been on the wall on the corner of James Street and Mogg Street for 10 years.

“We tried to include positive messages about the NHS, about diversity, about key workers," it said

Irony & Boe on Back Road

Apart from street art, is there anything more ubiquitous in Bristol than seagulls? London-based street artists Irony & Boe understand this and perfectly capture the city’s most consistent terrorisers in this leering portrait

Boe, Irony

Fabulous collaboration by Boe and Irony for Upfest 2017 - a huge seagull.

Barbara Dettering street art portrait mural Bristol

Michele Curtis, PaintsmithsSeven Saints of St Paul's

Another magnificent mural (one of seven) commemorating the civil rights activist Barbara Dettering. Stunning

Fern Street

This is the third of the Seven Saints of St Paul’s pieces by Michele Curtis and Paintsmiths that I have posted, and it is a real stunner. I love these pictures, because the light and sky are perfect, bringing out the best in the artwork

This ‘saint’ is Barbara Dettering, who was one of the co-founders of the St Paul’s Carnival (along with the other six ‘saints’) and who fought for the rights for people from the Afro-Caribbean community in Bristo

Michele Curtis and the Paintsmiths have once again pulled a rabbit out of a hat with this one. It is an exquisite mural and one that is such a classy way to recognise and pay tribute to local heroes. Not only is the portrait beautifully painted, but the flowers and exotic bird balance the piece perfectly. I love this.

Robot speakers street art mural Bristol

Robot speakers street art mural Bristol

FLX, 3Dom, Epok, Soker, Sepr, Horley Road, Bristol.

This is a gargantuan collaboration by some of Bristol’s very best street artists, that I first saw back in October 2016, although I am not sure how long it had been there. It is in the St Werburghs/St Pauls area of Bristol, and is a street I rarely get to.

I can’t tell you too much about what the whole piece is about, but I can tell you it was by FLX, 3Dom, Epok, Soker and Sepr. Who did what is a bit of guesswork, but this is how I think it works… The robot on the right looks like Sepr’s work, the wildstyle writing by Soker and Epok, The character in the top left with the big hair by FLX? and the crystal dome thing in the bottom left by 3Dom?

I am not too fussed about who did what, simply because the whole is a truly wonderful collaborative piece . I’m not sure how often this lot get to collaborate, but I wouldn’t think it is too often, so this really is a bit of a one-off.

Gage Graphics Tropical Paradise street art mural Bristol

Tropical paradise street art mural Bristol

To deliberately misquote a biblical phrase, ‘the Lord taketh away and the the Lord giveth’. The whole area of small businesses and light industrial units in the Upper York Street and Wilder Street area have been knocked down for new developments including housing and student accommodations, depriving street/graffiti artists from some premium walls. The gentrification programme is moving at pace and sweeping all around it aside.

It would appear that the developers of this block, which has been build with alarming speed during the coronavirus pandemic, have offered a small gesture that acknowledges the area’s street art heritage with this incredible mural from Gage Graphics. We know what an accomplished artist Ollie Gillard is and his outstanding murals can be found on private houses, restaurants and businesses all over Bristol. This is another fabulous addition to his portfolio that contributes to the whole Bristol USP thing.

The piece itself is a wonderful tropical paradise scene in which creatures of the forest admire a circus act being performed by a little mouse in the wooded foothills of a small mountain. Ollie Gillard transports us to a different place with this mural and there is so much detail to look at and admire. Well worth a visit, but does it compensate for the loss of the local street art walls, I guess only partially. It will be interesting to see whether this new build gets tagged and bombed, once all the hoardings come down.

The side of this house and the wall next to it have recently been given a wonderful makeover by Zase and Dekor. This is typical of the large murals we expect from this magnificent pairing.

Typical of their work are the scale, vibrant colours and dream-like scenes. I am not too sure what this is about, but flight appears to be the central theme.

These works all contain the main themed image with a wonderfully worked wildstyle signature incorporated

Blood Red Skull street art Bristol

Blood Red Skull street art Bristol

It is good to be posting a piece from Upper York Street… it has been a while, and even better that it is a thing of beauty by The Hass. this wonderful mural appeared a few months ago, but my first photographs of it were not at all good, so I have had to wait a while to get some new ones.

On the front of the Bristol Design Forge, this incredible skull is a great improvement on what was rather dreary and drab facade previously. The striking image is centred around the skull, and the patterned shapes cascading away create interest and colour to the whole wall. Another glorious production from The Hass, whose work really is out of the top drawer.
