Street art murals st. Matthews Way Leicester bring the paint

Amazing transformation of Leicester's grim 1960s Burley's fly-over

The dark and dull concrete of a 1960s Leicester landmark has been transformed by graffiti artists.

The six huge pillars supporting the Burley’s fly-over on the city’s inner ring road have become huge canvases and are now adorned with various different colourful designs - including trees, clouds, flowers and images of local landmarks.

The work has been commissioned by Leicester City Council to try to make the link between the city centre and The Golden Mile more attractive and has been carried out by street art specialists Graffwerk.

Graffwerk repainted the pedestrian crossings on Charles Street near the city council officers and painted the huge £50,000 mural by the new link road that connects Belgrave Gate and Mansfield Street.

The area under the fly-over used to be home to a series of lotus flower sculptures which have now been moved to the newly-created open space on Archdeacon Lane, close to the Charter Street Bridge entrance to Abbey Park

Deputy mayor councillor Adam Clarke said: “On Belgrave Gate, we are creating a much more attractive and direct route from the city centre to the Golden Mile and Abbey Park.

“These attractions are just a 15-minute walk from the Clock Tower and we want to encourage more people to make that short journey by foot or bike.”

Bring The paint 2017: In 2017 RUELO embraced the rough and uneven and difficult surface of his wall utilising the exposed brick as negative space within an overall piece of letter forms and a trippy character. Crumbling brick seeps out of open letters and a character merges as one.

Bring The Paint 2017 Core elements of traditional graffiti are celebrated in this vibrant and simple celebration of traditional graffiti by the Danish graffiti artist BATES. A giant tag shows off the typography of the streets; the handstyle, whilst a huge throw-up style piece bounces out of the wall with a huge blue smurf finally framing the wall. Aesthetically simple this wall is bright, vibrant and full of impact

Bring The Paint 2019Funded by Leicester City Football Clubs’ charitable trust this design was the result of an artist led session with women put forward by the club to discuss themes of female empowerment. Local kickboxing legend and Leicester representative for the This Girl Can campaign Natashan Mina was in attendance and gave such inspirational input that the artists decided to depict her. Focusing on the past and present and the universe within us they painted. Manchester based duo Nomad Clan focus a lot of their walls on themes that are relevant to the local heritage or that tell a story relevant to the local area and this wall is no different.
